FAMILY FUN DAYS AT THE NEWSEUM

From July 1 through Labor Day, the Newseum will waive its admission price for all youth visitors age 18 and younger. Newseum group policy requires one adult chaperone for every 10 youth. "Family Fun Deal" tickets, like all Newseum tickets, are valid for two consecutive days.

KONNICHIWA! A TOUR OF JAPANESE CULTURE THROUGH UKIYO-E
Ongoing - November 7, 2010: Regular hours l WASHINGTON COUNTY MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HAGERSTOWN, MD
Experience Japanese art and culture in this interactive exhibition. Woodblock prints or Ukiyo-e, pictures of the floating world, as well as decorative arts and textiles from the Museum's Permanent Collection, will be used to spark conversations about traditional Japanese life and culture. The exhibition will feature interactive stations aimed at school-age children and families. A set of three Chikanobu prints featuring ladies arranging flowers will be presented with a station where the significance of flower imagery and symbolism is explored. Visitors can use the artificial flowers and vase provided to create their own arrangement. Samples of traditional music and a video of Kabuki performances will be played and guests will be able to write their own Haiku at the Japanese calligraphy station.

TELLING STORIES: NORMAN ROCKWELL FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF GEORGE LUCAS AND STEVEN SPIELBERG

The exhibition is based on new research into Rockwell, his work and the relationships between the artist and the movies. It showcases fifty-seven major Rockwell paintings and drawings from these private collections. The museum is the only venue for the exhibition.

Museum astronomer Sean O'Brien and local amateur astronomers bring out their high-power telescopes and share their knowledge of the night sky. GECKOS: TAILS TO TOEPADS

In fall 2010, over 15 species of live geckos will set up residence at National Geographic Museum. The geckos represent species from all over the world and include such superlatives as the peacock day gecko and the satanic leaf-tailed gecko. Through a series of computer and tactile interactives, visitors can experience gecko night vision, magnify gecko toepads, listen to gecko voices, activate video clips of geckos in action, try to spot camouflaged geckos, and build a custom gecko for various environments.

AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE DAY

"Common Ground: Connecting Food, Land, and History" will be an entertaining exploration of African American culture with a special focus on foodways of the region. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the event honors the role that African Americans have played in our regional and national history and culture. We open for the fall season on Saturday September 25th from 10AM. To 5PM. We will be open every weekend through November 7th. No admission and no parking fees! Just bring your family out for a free hayride that takes you to our acres of field grown pumpkins and pick out the perfect pumpkin for you. Our educational 10+ acre corn maze & mini maze will also be open, ready to provide you with some good outdoor fun! We also have all our farm animals for you to feed, observation bee hives, a farm museum, a nature trail, scarecrow making, and a fully stocked country store!
