KONNICHIWA! A TOUR OF JAPANESE CULTURE THROUGH UKIYO-E
Ongoing - November 7, 2010: Regular hours l WASHINGTON COUNTY MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HAGERSTOWN
Experience Japanese art and culture in this interactive exhibition. Woodblock prints or Ukiyo-e, pictures of the floating world, as well as decorative arts and textiles from the Museum's Permanent Collection, will be used to spark conversations about traditional Japanese life and culture. The exhibition will feature interactive stations aimed at school-age children and families. A set of three Chikanobu prints featuring ladies arranging flowers will be presented with a station where the significance of flower imagery and symbolism is explored. Visitors can use the artificial flowers and vase provided to create their own arrangement. Samples of traditional music and a video of Kabuki performances will be played and guests will be able to write their own Haiku at the Japanese calligraphy station.

WALKING TOUR OF CIVIL WAR EMMITSBURG

Technological innovations meant that artillery fire was likely to result in large numbers of wounded soldiers following a battle. Come out and see living history volunteers portray Civil War artillery crews and field hospital staff. Learn how cannon were used in battle and the medical efforts that provided aid and comfort to the wounded. Artillery firing and medical demonstrations will take place at Gambrill Mill. Free admission.

Living historians will be on site both Saturday and Sunday providing programs, displays, and lectures about the Battle of Monterey Pass as well as civilians during the Civil War. The South Mountain State Battlefield Artillery Detachment will also be on site both Saturday and Sunday providing demonstrations on how an artillery detachment operated during the Civil War.
