Dear Homeschool Frederick!
I am having a hard time fufilling the state's physical education requirement for "regular and thorough instruction." Do you have any ideas how I can get my kids involved in a sport or activity to fulfill this? Are there any teams or sports groups around Frederick especially for homeschoolers?
-Homeschool Parent
Dear Homeschool Parent,
Yes, although regular and thorough instruction can easily take place at home as well. Nothing beats a good old hulu hoop, jump rope, or mini-trampoline for a cardio workout. Regular hikes, walks, or runs through the neighborhood will increase fitness. You can get some high quality exercise tapes/DVDs for kids, or try Wii Fit, which has become a favorite at our house.
But there are also many opporturnities for homeschoolers to participate in organized sports. For organized activities, check the Extracurricular Page here on Homeschool Frederick! for links to homeschool soccer groups, football, basketball, and cheer teams. The YMCA, Hood College, FCC, Frederick County Parks and Recreation, the City of Frederick, and other Frederick sports venues offer classes specifically for homeschoolers, usually held during the school day.
For spring, there are two great homeschool opportunities just gearing up now. You can contact the Hagerstown Area Youth Soccer League or the Frederick Homeschool Soccer group. We just received the notice below from the Frederick soccer group. Hope this gives you some ideas on where to look for homeschool fitness and fun.
