Dear Homeschool Frederick!,
I have a three year old son who was enrolled in a twice a week pre-school for the last year. My husband and I were not happy with the program, and neither was our son, so we have decided homeschool him for preschool. How should I respond when he talks about his school friends or going to his school while we transition to homeschool? Thank you for any advice you can provide.
Thanks,
Jennifer
Dear Jennifer,
Moving on from unfulfilling experiences creates new opportunities for you and your family. It is only natural that your son, though, will talk about his former school and his friends. Children - and all people for the most part -- are social and emotional creatures by nature. So, make sure that you are actively filling that social and emotional void with nurturing activities. Acclimate him to a new environment surrounded by new friendships and playdate opportunities. Several ways to ease this transition is through participation in various preschool activities at your local library, Frederick County Parks & Recreation, the YMCA, and other kid-related venues.
Since you're homeschooling, consider participating in local homeschool co-ops to provide a nurturing social and emotional setting. Drawing upon new experiences like these with your son will encourage and stimulate new friends and new memories.
Although it is healthy for your son to talk about his former friends or school from time to time, he will eventually move the focus of the conversation to new friends and activities. Actively focusing on present and future opportunities will help ease your son in this new, yet hopeful, transition.
Good luck!
