Ask HSF! Homeschool Advice Column

Dear Homeschool Frederick!,
We've had the honor of trying various activities for our homeschooled middle-school-aged children. Now that our school year is coming to a close, I wish to continue some education during the summer. However, I don't want it to feel like learning from books. What do you suggest?

Dear Karen,
Your email touches on the very foundation of homeschooling - continuing the learning, but incorporating fun at the same time. I would suggest that you tap into the Frederick County Public Libraries, for one. The programming is online with easy registration - and it won't feel like book work. Secondly, you might relish an opportunity to see your children explore new learning avenues. Our 3rd Annual Summer Camp Directory might be able to help your children draw upon family-friendly experiences that might be overlooked during the school year. Our segment - from May through July - showcases fishing, sports challenges, music, and everything in between...from organizations that support the homeschool ideology (yes!). And, finally, encourage your kids to explore something new. Perhaps a class in digital photography, theater, or nature journaling would create a lasting memory and spur a newfound passion! Explore the many talents and skills of qualified professionals around the County (i.e. YMCA, FCC, Frederick County Parks & Recreation) -- and see your kids grow without the book-feel they've may expect during the normal school year.

Sincerely,
HSF! Staff
