"Ask Angie!" Homeschool Advice Column

Dear Angie:

Confusing conundrum?  Perplexing problem? Simply Ask Angie!  Remember, your concerns are important to us; therefore, your identity will be kept strictly confidential.

My 7-year-old daughter reads a lot! She will read to anyone who will listen -- even her dolls! I try to give her books she will enjoy and also learn from, but I don’t think she should read too much. I worry though that she needs to have other points of interest. My parents think I am too tense, and my husband’s parents don’t think I am concerned enough. Who is right?P.B. in Frederick

Dear P.B.,

Reading is a perhaps the most wonderful gift a person can give. It lasts a lifetime, can be shared, and only improves with age! The fact that your daughter loves to read at such a tender age demonstrates she is eager to delve into the wonderful world of fantasy, adventure, and knowledge that comes with the joys of reading. She reads to her dolls which shows she is engaged in reading and playtime. Through pretend, she asks others to read with her as she is desirous to share her love of reading with those she knows and loves. Be sure to keep her involved with other activities with her friends as well as outdoor athletics or other physical activity. This way, she will keep her mind and her body in great shape! Don’t worry...you’re doing great!
