Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS)

To meet Maryland's supervision requirements, homeschoolers may opt to have FCPS' Department of Student Services monitor the progress of their homeschooled children.

The number of homeschooled students monitored by Frederick County Public Schools was 921 for the 2009-2010 school year. (There were 1650+ homeschooled students in Frederick County total in the same year.)

This year, homeschool families choosing local monitoring through FCPS have met with a new Home School Instruction Monitor. Ms. Janet Noffsinger became the new Home School Instruction Monitor for FCPS effective July 1, 2009.

At least 15 days before beginning any home schooling program, the parent/guardian should contact the FCPS Home School Instruction Monitor for copies of the:
  • Home Schooling Notification Form, and
  • Home Schooling Regulations (COMAR 13A.10.01)
Parents should submit the notification form to FCPS documenting their decision to school at home. Parents may also submit a Home Instruction Profile, a voluntary form provided by FCPS that helps guide the parent and monitor through curriculum choices during reviews.

A list of the most frequently asked questions at FCPS regarding homeschooling can be found here.

Remember that the regulations for all homeschoolers are contained within the Maryand law. A local school system may not impose additional requirements for home instruction programs other than those in these regulations.

[For Maryland homeschool law, see Education Article. §7.301, Annotated Code of Maryland, Compulsory Attendance. See Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) 13A.10.01 for regulations governing home schooling in Maryland.]
